This online interactive case study course helps sharpen nurse clinician's clinical knowledge and skills to work in triage or the obstetric emergency department (OBED). Its core essentials impact the clinician's ability to prevent denial and delays in optimal nursing care that contribute to maternal morbidity and mortality. Case studies within the education address ten common obstetric conditions including early labor, term labor and rupture of membranes, preterm labor, decreased fetal movement, hypertension, nausea & vomiting, motor vehicle accidents & falls, bleeding in pregnancy, abdominal pain, and urinary tract infections.
As clinicians work through the case studies, they are challenged to assess and prioritize patients' acuity level using the Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI), analyze key findings suggestive of a variety of differential diagnoses, and consider effective communication skills related to SBAR reporting, coping strategies, shared decision making, and anticipatory guidance.
